On Route to Red Bay, AL

May 27 – 30, 2022

Day 1

We left Escalante around 10:30 after my last meeting and drove 447 miles, all the way to Breckenridge, CO, arriving just around sunset. JJ booked us a pull-through site in a fancy RV Park, that we could not really enjoy long enough. The site was a little too short too and the truck stuck out in the rear, but we were too lazy to unhook. Were planning on leaving early in the morning anyway.

This day was likely the most scenic out of the whole trip to Red Bay. We got to see RT 12 again all the way to Torrey. Then driving through Capital Reef and finally climbing up into the Rockies. Driving along the Colorado River is perhaps the most beautiful stretch of I-70. It seems we are not the only ones who love this area. Hence it’s very crowded.

Day 2

Another long day. 625 miles of driving, mostly on I-70. Climbing up the Vail pass was horrible because the road was extremely bad. It took me many miles after that to recover.

My friend Nick had told me how much he dislikes the Kansas part of I-70, so our expectations were very low. It wasn’t too bad, actually. Having very low expectations sometimes helps.

The wind was picking up towards the end of the day and driving was more difficult.

Day 3

From Kansas to Mississippi. 543 miles. Most of it with very strong crosswinds. Wind is mostly blowing from South. Trees are growing funny in this part of the country, with the crowns primarily developing on the downwind side of the trunks.

We knew that wind would get worse in the morning and took the route heading straight East to get away from it as fast as we could. Still made for a challenging day.

EZ Daze is a nice park on the outskirts of Memphis. If we ever wanted to come back here to explore the area, we would definitely stay there again.

Day 4

That was easy! We left around 6am so that we would arrive as early as possible. On a day when many Tiffins decent on Red Bay it’s almost like a race for spot in the campground and getting a number on the waiting list as low as possible. We did our best.

It’s warm and humid.
